Speaking in a Way People Understand

Doctrine and Covenants 1:24 teaches that God speaks to us "according to our language, unto our understanding." This verse highlights an essential truth about communication: understanding comes first, not eloquence. God does not expect us to decipher complex language or hidden meanings; instead, He meets us where we are. That principle applies directly to effective communication in both personal and professional settings.

Good communication requires awareness of who we are speaking to. If we focus more on sounding impressive than being understood, we risk losing our audience entirely. Whether we are writing for a client, a professor, or a general audience, clarity matters more than complexity. The best communicators tailor their message to resonate with the listener's experience and needs.

This verse reminds me that communication is an act of service. When we choose language that is accessible and thoughtful, we show respect for the people we are speaking to. Clear communication builds trust, connection, and understanding. All of which are essential in professional writing.
